The Rules · from Part 1
What happens if you withdraw more than $10,000 in cash?
Short answer
Yes. US banks must file a Currency Transaction Report with the government for any cash deposit, withdrawal or exchange of more than $10,000 (31 CFR 1010.311). Splitting it up to dodge the report is its own crime.
Any cash deposit, withdrawal or exchange of more than $10,000 at a US bank triggers a Currency Transaction Report (CTR) to FinCEN, the Treasury's financial-crimes unit (31 CFR 1010.311). It happens automatically, every time, for anyone — a CTR on its own doesn't mean you did anything wrong.
